ER’14 Symposium programme

The ER’14 symposium held on 19th & 20th November 2014 proposes an overview through practical examples of construction sector projects focusing on energy efficiency, renewable energy and the building’s environmental quality. The Minergie-P renovation of the ‘La Cigale’ residential buildings will be presented during these conferences.

Swiss Solar Award for a Geneva project

The Geneva La Cigale housing cooperative, located in the Nations district of Geneva, received the 2014 Swiss Solar Award in the Renovations category. The project is Switzerland’s largest sustainable renovation project with Minergie-P certification. The work, managed by Brolliet, which is responsible for managing the two buildings on the site, divided the energy requirements of the 273 apartments by five. The buildings benefited from a new envelope, dual-flow ventilation, LED lighting and solar thermal equipment for heating and domestic hot water (DHW) generation. Constructed in 1952, the energy consumption of both buildings was too high.

The pilot project for the ‘La Cigale’ cooperative in Geneva is Switzerland’s largest Minergie-P renovation project. It divided the total energy requirements of the two buildings, built in the 50s and housing 273 apartments, by five: from 5,509,700 kWh/a, consumption decreased to 1,069,600 kWh/a (-81%). To recover the lost 4.44 million kWh, the building benefited from a new Minergie-P compliant envelope, dual-flow ventilation, LED lighting and A+ domestic appliances when replaced. Two heat facilities covering a total surface area of 1670 m2 generate nearly 554,800 kWh, or 52% of annual requirements. The Minergie-P renovation and solar thermal sensors have decreased CO2 emissions from 1961 to 183 tonnes per year (-91%).

La Cigale [English: cicada] to sing all summer long

The ‘La Cigale’ cooperative, founded in 1952, started its renovation work on its two buildings, built in that same year, in spring 2013. Located on the corner of the Rue de Vermont and the Rue du Vidollet, both buildings needed a full renovation to their façades, including a new heating system, to replace the traditional boiler room, which had reached the end of its working life and consumed too much energy.
